Back to the Prehistory- Tito Bustillo World Heritage Site & Dinosaur Coast

8 Hours

This day tour brings you back to the prehistory in Asturias!

Asturias has a great variety of prehistoric treasures. You can find dozens of caves with unique prehistoric cave art. And along the coast between Gijon and Ribadesella, there are at least nine sites where you can discover original dinosaur fossils.

We’ll visit multiple prehistoric sites during this tour:

  • Tito Bustillo Cave, a World Heritage Site with one of the most spectacular examples of prehistoric cave art in Europe;
  • Tito Bustillo Cave Art Centre with replicates of the inaccessible parts of the Tito Bustillo Cave;
  • Ardines Cave, a geological dome of more than 40 meters in height (if time permits);
  • Dinosaur Museum of Asturias;
  • Asturias’ beautiful coast to discover gigantic prehistoric dinosaur footprints.*

If you want to go back to the prehistory in Asturias, this is the tour for you!

* The order depends on the available time slots of the guided visits for the particular day

Overview

This tour let you discover two main aspects of Asturias’ prehistory: prehistoric cave art and dinosaur fossils.

The paleolithic art discovered in the Tito Bustillo Cave in 1968 is among Europe’s most spectacular cave art. We’ll visit the most impressive “panel” with over 100 figures, among which the famous depictions of bovines, horses and deer.

Since not all of Tito Bustillo’s panels are accessible for the public, we’ll also visit the nearby Tito Bustillo Cave Art Center. The center contains replicas of the other cave art. It also gives an excellent impression of the hunter-gatherers that occupied this area between 35.000 and 10.000 years ago. They made the art, and we’ll learn everything about their lives and habits.

If time permits, we’ll also visit the Ardines Cave, which is part of the Tito Bustillo Cave complex. It’s an impressive cave of over 40 meters in height.

Afterwards, we’ll drive along Asturias’ Dinosaur Coast to Colunga. This part of the coast gets its name because of the abundant presence of original dinosaur footprints and fossil bones from dinosaurs and other Jurassic reptiles.

Here, we’ll guide you around the Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA) where you can learn everything about these impressive reptiles that inhabited the earth between 251 and 65 million years ago.

Finally, we’ll take a stroll along the beautiful coast to search for original dinosaur footprints. These sauropod tracks are among the largest in the world!

Note: Since the itinerary of the day depends on the availability of entrance tickets to the Tito Bustillo cave, the order of the places we’ll visit can change. However, we’ll visit all the places mentioned. We’ll inform you about the exact program after your reservation.

  1. Memorable day in Asturias

    Debora de Block guided us to a very memorable October day in Asturias, Spain. Immediately at pick up from our hotel, Debora was warm and friendly like a long-time friend. She put together a custom tour route for us -- a sidra llagar (brewery,) a famous prehistoric cave with wall paintings, a walk at the coast, and an incredible viewpoint where we saw high peaks, the coast, a lovely fishing harbor and village. For lunch, the fish and shellfish was fresh and fantastic, from a seaside restaurant.

  2. One of the highlights of our trip to Europe

    Debora's tour to see the Jurassic Museum of Asturias, a walk along Las Griegas Beach to see 100 million year old dinosaur footprints, and the Tito Bustillo Cave to see 20,000 year old prehistoric cave art, was one of the highlights of our trip to Europe. Debora was well-organized, accommodating of my request to combine the itineraries from two of her tours, and an excellent guide and companion.
