Some background about the emigration from Asturias

Thousands of Asturians emigrated to Argentina, Mexico, Cuba and other parts of ‘the Americas’ in the 19th and 20th century. Many of them found their new home in these countries. Only around 5% of them returned.

Casas de Indianos

The returning emigrants were called Indianos. They built large mansions reflecting their newly acquired wealth. These houses and gardens bear little resemblance to the local Asturian architecture. Indeed, they are more similar to homes found in Buenos Aires, Havana, or Mexico. In the town of Colombres alone, there are 68 of these Casas de Indianos.

Asturian Emigration Museum

An optional visit of this ancestry tour in Asturias is the ‘Indianos Archive’ or Emigration Museum in Colombres. This museum is situated in a typical Casa de Indianos built in 1906 by a returning emigrant from Mexico. In this museum you find various artifacts related to the Asturian emigration. For example, travel tickets, posters announcing ship departures and photographs of various Asturian associations formed in the new world.

  3. Spectacular Asturias - finding my roots, from the ocean cliffs to the depths of a mine!

Debora gave us a custom tour of Asturias to visit the town of my Grandfather in Arnao- we visited the church where he was baptized San Martin de Laspra on the Camino Norte and then to Santa Maria Del Mar to the church his parents were married in overlooking the ocean. We feasted on an Asturian Lunch of Cachopo and Torta de abuela with local cider. The highlights were the museum of anchors on the coast, Elenore the steam train that transported coal from the mine and the tour into the Submarine Mine at Arnao. She is a lovely knowledgeable guide that went above and beyond and has my highest recommendation!

  4. Wonderful, personalized ancestry tour

Debora arranged a wonderful and personalized ancestry tour, and we are so grateful for her effort, energy, and hard work. Her tour was a totally enjoyable and very personal event in our lives. Her command of the language was impressive; her attention to detail helped us to relate to our own genealogy; and, her sacrifice & effort gave us a glimpse into life in Aviles many years ago. The tour of the old mine was both enlightening and frightening. And, the 2 elderly women who opened the Church (San Martin) in Laspra were charming and delightful. We are very happy & thankful that we had the opportunity to meet her and to utilize her very able skill & knowledge to guide us along the way in Aviles.

I want to say thank you for giving me and my daughter the tour of a lifetime! We are still processing so much of what we saw and heard about Asturias and the life of the Vaqueiros, which your resources confirmed was part of my ancestry. I am so grateful to have had your guidance to get around and to show us all that we requested in the short time we were there. We will definitely have to return to Asturias and make more time for all the beauty it offers!

I cannot possibly recommend Debora enough! 500 words isn't enough to describe how much she went above and beyond for my family. We chose Debora's ancestry tour for my Grandmother, who was visiting her homeland for the first time. Debora planned and executed an absolutely perfect trip that was personalized to her interests. She spent countless hours perfecting it and went beyond our wildest dreams and hopes. She was kind, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. We absolutely loved her!
